India has been reporting a steep rise in the daily COVID-19 infections since the start of 2022. In fact, just on January 6, the overall cases surpassed the one lakh mark—the highest for the first time in the last seven months!

Experts have warned that the exponential rise in cases could be a sign of an impending third wave driven by the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2. Moreover, modelling studies have indicated that the wave might peak between January-end and the beginning of February, by notching infections up to 10 lakh.

In order to better protect India’s most vulnerable groups, the government will begin administering third doses of the COVID-19 vaccines—meant to function as precautionary booster jabs—across the country from Monday, January 10
